Catherine Chen is a Brooklyn-based poet and performer of Taiwanese descent. They have received fellowships from The Watermill Center, Theater Mitu, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (Arts Center Residency 2021), and Lambda Literary. Chen is the author of Beautiful Machine Woman Language (Noemi Press, 2023).

Georgios Cherouvim works with computer animation and code. His work has been shown in festivals including Siggraph, ArsElectronica, SXSW, ISEA and ArtFutura. Georgios teaches at the School of Visual Arts, he is a member of Onassis ONX, a mentor at the NewInc and was an artist-in-residence at the Watermill Center.

We’re interested in the interactive and experiential uses of a pen plotter machine to explore the performative process of writing and the automation of labor. During the residency, Catherine will write lines of poetry that Georgios will codify into textual designs that will be printed on paper by the machine. As we collectively ‘write’ the live act of ‘drawing’ a poem, we contextualize the history and methodology of writing as technology, in addition to its expanded scope within the digital era.
