CoLab | Building, Seeing, and Thinking in 3D

CoLab is CultureHub’s art & technology program for young artists ages 14- 20. In a fun, collaborative setting, students learn new skills, develop their creative voices, and make art to share with their friends and family at the end of the Program.

This summer, CultureHub is offering a one week module Building, Seeing, and Thinking in 3D taught by Camille Weins and Tahnee Gehm.

The following CoLab program goals are introduced and reinforced within this course.

  • develop conceptual thinking skills to generate ideas and content in order to solve problems or create opportunities.

  • develop technical skills to realize their ideas.

  • develop critical thinking skills that will allow them to analyze and position their work within cultural, historic, aesthetic, economic, and technological contexts.

COURSE STRUCTURE
Class will take place remotely using Zoom

By the end of Colab you will have made:
-1 3D Model
-1 Instagram Filter

CLASS SCHEDULE
Day 1
-Introduction to 3D modeling, Learn how to use primitives. Discussion proper topology.
-Make a tree. Learn how to use common tools for manipulating meshes in Vectary. Importing image planes.

Day 2
-Learn how to make a robot. Learn how to set material colors and use gifs as textures.
-Learn how to light the scene and set the camera. Learn how to export/publish projects.

Day 3
-Introduction to Spark AR. Learn how to import a 3D object and place it into an environment or attach to a face.

Day 4
-Learn about basic interactions in Spark AR using the Patch Editor. Learn how to export a filter to Instagram.

Day 5
-Present Interactive Project

PARTICIPATION
One of the course goals is to foster an internal community. Students will be expected to participate in discussions and give feedback to their peers both in class and outside of class. Ask questions, help each other find answers, and share interesting discoveries. If you have a question, you're not the only one! Please ask questions publicly during class. This way, your classmates can learn from and contribute to the discussion.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTISTS
Tahnee Gehm is a graduate of CalArts' Character Animation program, where she drew lots of cartoons and made award-winning films. Currently she works in advertising, doing motion graphics and creating AR filters for big-name brands.

Camille Weins the Creative Technologist for CultureHub Los Angeles. She uses her background in arts, technology, and science to help further develop the projects at Culture Hub and assist Resident Artists. She holds a MPS from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program and a BS in Integrated Digital Media from NYU Tandon.
