CultureHub hosts a conversation on emergent distributed strategies for community engagement. This virtual event gathers a panel of arts leaders and community organizers based in Los Angeles and New York working with art, art and tech, and community initiatives. The conversation will center around how collectives have been devising new grassroots engagement strategies during this time of remote connection, in conjunction with innovative technology or by activating other means of interaction. The panelists will also discuss how they envision sustaining and/or adapting their approaches in the long term.

Panelists include: Alice Yuan Zhang & Sara Suárez (virtual care lab), Mad Pinney (POWRPLNT), Taehee Whang (Hyperlink Press), Tamilla Woodard (Working Theater, PopUP Theatrics), Ella Hillström & Christoffer Horlitz (Anti-Customs Enforcement), Yo-Yo Lin, and Jasmine Hayden.

This conversation will take place on Zoom webinar. Register via Eventbrite and receive a link to engage with our panelists live. The conversation will also be livestreamed on the CultureHub Watch page and Facebook where viewers can chat in to ask questions.

Tamilla Woodard (she/her) is the co-Artistic Director of Working Theater in New York and  the founder of the site specific international partnership, PopUP Theatrics. Tamilla has directed at theaters nationally and internationally, most recently staging the  national collaboration and digital tour of American Dreams. www.americandreamsplay.com

Taehee Whang is a Korean-American interdisciplinary artist currently based in Queens, NY. Their work combines experimental animation, drawing, prose writing to propose alternative archives for family history, female labor, and queer community. They are also a founder of Hyperlink Press, a publication project inspired by the early 2000s queer online communities in South Korea.

Mad Pinney is the Marketing & Programs Manager at POWRPLNT, an organization operating on the notion that access to technology is a right, not a privilege. There she facilitates community organizing, artist workshops, and leveraging the power of collective networks to build spaces of care and creativity.

Yo-Yo Lin is a Taiwanese-American, interdisciplinary media artist who explores the possibilities for self-knowledge in the context of emerging, embodied technologies. She is currently developing digital and analog tools in reclaiming chronic health trauma, investigating the generative nature of the ill/ disabled bodymind and facilitating sites for community-centered abundance. Yo-Yo Lin is a current CultureHub Resident Artist.

Jasmine Hayden is a multi-disciplinary artist & facilitator using virtual interactive playshops to expand impact within intersectional activism and environmental justice. Jasmine Hayden is a current CultureHub Resident Curator.

Alice Yuan Zhang is an artist, designer, and program organizer engaging in ecological and social futuring through playful new media and collaborative space-making. She is a 2020-21 CultureHub resident, involved member of NAVEL, and studied at U.C. Berkeley. Sara Suárez is a filmmaker and sound artist exploring collective memory and sensory perception. She also designs sound for film and installations, and manages programs for Zócalo Public Square. She received an MFA from CalArts and is based in Los Angeles.

virtual care lab is an experimental series and online community envisioning an accessible, autonomous, empathetic digital space where creative collaboration is a form of civic engagement. virtual care lab is co-organized by Alice Yuan Zhang and Sara Suárez alongside distributed community leadership. 

Christoffer Horlitz and Ella Hillström - members of A.C.E Collective - have been researching how Digitalized Borders are impacting artist communities, recently as CultureHub Resident Artists 2019-2020. Christoffer Horlitz is a curator and researcher based in Berlin. He works on topics such as security migration and digital policy for think tanks and art projects. He studied politics and arts in Leipzig, Paris, New York and Berlin. Ella Hillström is an anthropologist, primarily writing in the intersection of aesthetics and disability. She received her M.A. in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research and is currently based in Stockholm where she is active in the network No-Human-is-Illegal.
