The Korea Project 2021: Agora is a virtual gallery showcasing the work of contemporary Korean and Korean American artists. The digital works in the exhibition span various forms including 3D sculpture, audiovisual media, projection mapping, and graphic design. These adventurous artists exemplify the multiplicity of voices, approaches, and perspectives of the Hallyu (Korean) Wave.
The Korea Project 2021: Agora is funded by Korea Foundation.
Objectivity without Objectivity
Cho Sang
Objectivity without Objectivity is an attempt to form a visual language and video installation of Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic concept ‘Of the Gaze as Objet Petit a.’ Within the logic of psychoanalysis, the artist focuses on the process of creating new language with his true voice, by controlling the language of the Other (L’autre) beyond the so-called ubiquitous grammar.
Reflections on Geometry
Hyun Chul Cho
This project, Reflection on Geometry, attempts to converge technology and contemporary art; it aims to abridge the distance between art and the audience through an understanding of the philosophical depth of art, an overlooked aspect in the growing art technology field and to cultivate a scholastic union of science and art and art technology’s deepened philosophical narrative. The work consists of a total of three parts- i) the inspiration of arts, from nature to fractal, ii) the challenge of art, from fractal to geometry, and iii) the light of art, from geometry to space. The exhibition, also named ’Space Rebooting Convergence,’ was presented in a collaboration with the ATEC lobby space at Seoul Institute of the Arts.
Works by the Han Diaspora Group
Han Diaspora Group - Scarlett Kim, Kwonyin, Saewon Oh, Yunuen Rhi, Jeong (Lynn Stransky), Kayla Tange, and Caroline Yoo
Han Diaspora Group, a group of Los Angeles-based artists of Korean descent, creates a series of digitally-presented sculptures invoking iconic female figures from Korean classical mythology. The artists draw upon powerful goddesses, monsters, and female figures associated with Korean origin stories and folktales. Using contemporary multimedia strategies as well as timeless art-making practices, the artists recontextualize the classical narratives and characters in today’s world, bringing attention to stories that are central to Korean consciousness throughout history. The works address themes such as marginal identities, female empowerment, and reconnecting with origin stories as a means to imagine new futures.
