A new world has emerged. What was once called advertising has advanced into an ideological regime in which individual and micro marketing are integrated into every facet of contemporary life. Telepresence and avatar technologies have eliminated the need for (awkward) social interaction. We are safe, known, public, and lonely. This is the basis of Art Jones’ work-in-progress, Transmitting Live from Virtual Babylon.
Working in real-time, live-streamed via social media, Art Jones will present a model of in-person, spontaneous collaboration as a counter to screen-based, asynchronous, socially mediated time. Bouncing ideas off each other, using mutual exploration and the creative potential of (mis) translation and (mis) understanding, the artist and audiences will construct an improvised audiovisual experience.
Over the course of a one-week residency at CultureHub, Art Jones will develop elements of the performance Transmitting Live from Virtual Babylon: an immersive media performance with multichannel audio, stereographic (Anaglyph red/blue glasses) live action video and animation, and VR. Each days work of the residency will produce a live mix of the sounds and images produced during that jam session/lab experiment, all of which will culminate in a final performance. Using multi-screen, multichannel audio, and virtual environment capabilities of CultureHub, Jones will explore how to construct collaborative audiovisual soundscapes to provide a truly immersive experience to the audience.
This project is supported within the CultureHub Residency program.
