La MaMa Experimental
Theatre Club
La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club is dedicated to the artist and all aspects of the theater. La MaMa provides a supportive home for artists and takes risks on new work. An integral part of New York City’s cultural landscape, La MaMa has a worldwide reputation for producing daring work in theater, dance, performance art, and music that defies form and transcends boundaries of language, race, and culture.
Founded in 1961 by legendary theater pioneer Ellen Stewart, La MaMa is a global organization with creative partners and dedicated audiences around the world. Now under the artistic direction of Mia Yoo, La MaMa is finding new ways and new technologies to fulfill La MaMa’s mission and global vision. La MaMa produces between 50–60 productions annually, most of which are world premieres. To date, over 5,000 productions have been presented at La MaMa with artists from more than 76 nations. La MaMa’s programming is culturally diverse, cross-disciplinary and draws audiences from all walks of life. In addition to low ticket prices, La MaMa distributes up to 7,000 free tickets annually to established nonprofit senior centers, women’s shelters, schools and other social service organizations through its Ticket Subsidy Program. In its 56 year history, La MaMa has been honored with the 2018 Regional Theater Tony Award, more than 30 Obie Awards, dozens of Drama Desk and Bessie Awards, and Villager Awards.
