Nite Bjuti (pronounced "Night Beauty") is a woman-led improvisatory trio using vocalism, electronic improvisation, Haitian drum rhythms, and bass to create narrative sonic journeys that provoke mixed media. Nite Bjuti spans jazz idiom, Haitian voudon, acoustic/electric bass, turntables and electronics. In 2021, they collaborated virtually with maestro Wayne Shorter. Candice Hoyes writes poetry, sings, and plays looper. Val Jeanty plays Korg Wavedrum, Vestax Controller VCI-400, Roland handsonic, and sensory percussion. Mimi Jones plays acoustic and electric basses. Winners of 2020 NYC Women's Fund, Nite Bjuti debuted at Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2018, and was hailed by JazzTimes, "the biggest revelation of [2020 NYC WinterJazzfest]."

As inspiration, we draw from a transcendent Haitian folk story called “Night Beauty” where a young woman’s bones begin to sing in her afterlife for justice sake. Nite Bjuti envisions our music in many mixed media spaces, from electronic and experimental jazz festivals to art galleries, film, television and dance installations. We are inspired to rediscover the buried beauty in the world, because singing and drumming are transcendent languages across generations.
